Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Dallas) bested Jane Hope Hamilton in Tuesday's primary runoff election for the Democratic nomination for Texas' 30th U.S. House District.

Crockett nearly won the party's nomination to replace longtime U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Dallas) in the House outright in March. Instead, she faced Jane Hope Hamilton, former chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey (D-Fort Worth).

Johnson endorsed Crockett, a first-term state representative, and Crockett finished first in the primary with 48.5% of the vote -- just 1.5% shy of the threshold needed to avoid a runoff. Hamilton finished second with 17.1% of the vote.

Johnson, who announced her retirement, is the only person to ever represent the district and was first elected in 1992.
