The driver of a tractor-trailer involved in a crash Tuesday morning that damaged a bridge and several vehicles has been arrested for driving under the influence.
Virginia State Police responded to the incident around 5:20 on I-81 where it crosses the I-581 Bridge in Roanoke County.
Troopers say a northbound semi-truck ran off the roadway and struck the bridge, leaving behind debris in the roadway. The truck came to a rest partially hanging off the bridge.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, later identified as Steven P. Lender, 50, of Pennsauken, New Jersey, fled the scene, VSP reported, but was located walking on the northbound side of I-81 near mile marker 144.
He was taken into custody and questioned, and later charged with DUI and misdemeanor hit-and-run.
No injuries were reported but several vehicles were disabled as a result of striking the debris left in the roadway.
