The Mets opened up a three-game series in San Fransisco with a bang, beating the Giants 13-3 behind a stellar performance by Pete Alonso. The Polar Bear went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored Monday night. An early-season NL MVP front runner, Alonso bumped up his batting average up to .288, and an OBP of .356 as his latest hot streak doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

Pete leadoff the second inning on an infield single to the shortstop but was left stranded as the Mets weren’t able to bring him in. Following a two-run double from Francisco Lindor to tie the game in the fourth, Alonso hit a three-run home run off Alex Cobb to put the Mets up 5-2 which would end up being all the Mets needed to win the game. It capped off a five-run inning, with all the runs coming with two outs.

Alonso would hit another infield single in the eighth inning, this time to the pitcher, and would score off of a two-run home from Jeff McNeil. Alonso’s xSLG (.569.) is in the top 8% in the entire league, while his hard-hit percentage is currently the second-best of his young career at 46.5%.

Also, the 27-year-old is now tied for first in the National League with 11 home run, and his 40 RBIs are second in the major leagues (one behind Jose Ramirez).

J.D. Davis was asked about Alonso after the game and said, “It doesn’t surprise us at all what Pete’s doing. It was just a matter of time. Vintage Pete, it’s gonna be fun to watch him getting things going.”

The Mets’ bats woke up beautifully Monday night, and the team will need to keep it coming as the timetables for both Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer remain up in the air.
