Augusta-area residents can see now see the masterpieces of Vincent Van Gogh through an experiential and modern platform.

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is showing at James Brown Arena in downtown Augusta through June 25. The exhibit uses hi-tech projectors to create huge, multi-dimensional images of Van Gogh's works across the walls and floors with the artwork brought to life – shimmering swirls dance in "Starry Night" and petals fly across the space for "Almond Blossom."

Art historian Fanny Curtat explained that, while many remember Van Gogh for the more depressing moments of his life, looking at his art tells a whole other story.

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience awaits visitors during a media preview day on Monday, May 23, 2022. The exhibit allows visitors to step into projections of Vincent Van Gogh's works and learn about the artist through music and history.

"It's filled with color, it's filled with joy, it's the remedies he found for the demons in his life," Curtat said at a media preview day Monday. "In a period of crisis upon crisis upon crisis like we've been going through recently, to have somebody who's known for struggling in his life and was able to transcend all of the darkness into works of life and joy and beauty, there's still something very inspiring about that."

Guests begin their experience in the Introduction Hall, featuring panels of biographical information and explanations of the major elements of the artist's work. Then they step into the "Waterfall Room," which cycles through 35 minutes of looped artwork. Guests can relax on bean bags and benches, just taking in the lights and the colors for as long as they like. It caps off with a gift shop featuring all kinds of Van Gogh-inspired merchandise.

"Starry Night" is among the many works by Vincent Van Gogh showcased in pixels at Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, open May 24-June 26 at James Brown Arena in Augusta.
