Man walking on N.J. tracks fatally struck by freight train

A man walking on railroad tracks was struck and killed by a freight train early Tuesday in Somerset County, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not immediately available, was struck by a Norfolk Southern train shortly after 2 a.m. in Bound Brook, said Connor Spielmaker, a spokesman for the freight train company.

“A person walking within the gauge of the track was struck by a Norfolk Southern train traveling on New Jersey Transit tracks this morning,” Spielmaker said.

All railroads share tracks and the Norfolk Southern train was traveling on NJ Transit tracks when the person was hit, Spielmaker said.

Spielmaker said the man was not near a crossing or “within any public right-of-way” when he was hit by the train.

The train was carrying only an engineer and a conductor. Neither worker was hurt, Spielmaker said. The death is being investigated by NJ Transit and Bound Brook police, Spielmaker said.
