Dogs rescued from weekend apartment fire in Columbia

An apartment fire in eastern Columbia resulted in the rescue of two four-legged friends Sunday. 

The Columbia Fire Department responded at about 4:02 p.m. Sunday to The Greens apartment complex in the 4800 block of Clark Lane. 

The fire was coming from a second-story apartment based on images posted to social media by the fire department. 

Two dogs were rescued from the apartment fire and treated with oxygen and other emergency care before they were transferred to animal control for further evaluation and treatment. The dogs were up and walking within 20 minutes based on social media timestamps. 

Not all animals survived. One cat and two rabbits were killed as a result of the fire.

The fire department had the blaze under control within 10 minutes and were venting the apartment of smoke. 

A ladder truck was on scene of the fire. The fire started in the kitchen when combustible items came in contact with the stovetop, the department reported.
