CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Some in the Tri-State are considering "staycation" as travel prices soar, but others are vowing to move forward with their summer travel plans regardless of the cost.
Ronald Willingham says he has just one trip planned for the summer: he’s flying his grandson to Minneapolis for his birthday.
“He wanted to go to the biggest mall ever, so if it wasn’t for that, we’d be staying here,” said Willingham.
Willingham says he would otherwise opt to stay in Cincinnati after noticing an increase in everything from air fares to the cost of eating out.
“On something that you would normally pay $5 or $6 for two people, you’re almost up to $20,” he said.
Nate Waspe decided to spend his day off playing frisbee in Washington Park as opposed to traveling out of town.
“There’s a lot to do in the city, so you don’t have to go far,” he said.
If you’re driving, the farther you go, the more you’ll pay.
In the past month, the price of gas has risen 70 cents per gallon in the Tri-State.
It’s a price Amy Hyde says she is prepared to pay as she drives across the country with her camper.
“It’s something to consider, but, I mean, gas is still less than a lot of things,” Hyde said.
Despite the rising cost of travel, many are still planning to make the most of their summer abroad.
“I’m going camping, probably in Detroit, which, I’m gonna drive there," said Rachel Ball. "I haven’t really considered gas prices yet."
