BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Berkeley Animal Center said it is out of room to house additional stray animals.

To free up space, it has significantly lowered its adoption fees to $5 with a donation of dog or cat food.

Adoption fees typically range anywhere from $50 to $200, depending on the animal. However, it includes spay/neuter, microchip, flea/tick preventatives and appropriate vaccinations.

“Today [Monday] we had 12 dogs, 10 newborn puppies, 2 puppies (about 2 1/2 months old), and a medical emergency come in, and this was only our 1/2 day,” BAC posted to its official Facebook page Monday. “This doesn’t even include all the ones that came in over the weekend.”

Along with offering reduced adoption fees, the center says it is in desperate need of volunteers.

“Sending out an S.O.S. We are at max capacity and need fosters and adopters for dogs today,” the center said. “We are begging for help. If you would like to volunteer, please come in after 9 a.m.”

The shelter is also asking owners who are missing a pet to stop by BAC to see if the animal is there.

“Reclaims are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adoptions are 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.”
