Why you should arrive earlier at Philadelphia International Airport for your summer flight

PHL expects an increase in passengers, and they have numerous suggestions for travelers

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia International Airport said they expect about an 18% increase in passengers to go through their terminals this summer season compared to the same time in 2021, and a 233% increase compared to the summer of 2020.

“We're expecting to see 7.7 million passengers coming through Philadelphia International Airport between June and August of this year,” said PHL Deputy Director of Strategic Partnerships Kate Sullivan.

Because of the expected increase in travelers, the Transportation Security Administration said people should arrive about two-and-a-half to three hours before their departure time.

"The two suggestions we're making to passengers in general for this summer is to leave plenty of time to get to the airport and get through all of the procedures and checkpoints you have to get through the airport,” said Sullivan.

“But also, do you research in advance, and plan your trip in advance."

Such advanced planning includes deciding where to park, or possibly using SEPTA to get to the airport. PHL closed 7,000 parking spots in March 2020 and re-opened about 2,000 of those spots in April.

“We've got two main parking options. We have our garage parking … available steps from the terminals,” said Sullivan.

“We've also recently reopened a section of our economy lot, and our customers can park in the economy lot for $15 a day and take a shuttle from the economy lot to the terminals.”
