The Iowa Pork Producers Association and Tyson Foods Inc. will team up Tuesday afternoon with a local pig farmer to give away free uncooked pork loins in Pattee Park.

“It’s our way of saying ‘Thank you’ for supporting Iowa pig farmers and employees at pork processing facilities the past two years, as they’ve worked through several adjustments caused by COVID-19 on pork supply chains,” said a Pork Producers spokesperson.

Beginning at 4 p.m., Perry residents will be given free frozen pork loins of 4 to 5 pounds. The pork loin giveaway will continue until 6 p.m. or until the supply runs out. The distribution will occur in the Pattee Park parking lot at W. Third Street and Park Road in Perry.

Iowa pig farmers and community volunteers will help distribute the loins, which are provided by the Iowa Pork Producers and Tyson Foods Inc. One pound of pork is four servings of protein.

Preceding the free pork event will be a 1:30 p.m. ceremony in the Spring Valley Ballroom of the Hotel Pattee, where pork thank-you baskets will be given to first responders, and pork coupons and recipes will be distributed to Perry-area grocers so they can share those with their customers.

A donation of pork will also be made to the Perry Emergency Food Pantry in support of its continued work to alleviate hunger.

Participating in the 1:30 event in the hotel will be Perry Mayor John Andorf, Churdan pig farmer Connor Juergensen, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, Matt McDevitt of the Raccoon Valley Bank, Dan Richardson and Seth Fevold of Tyson Foods Inc. and Lou Hoger of the Perry Emergency Food Pantry.

Iowa pig farmers are holding similar “Thank you” celebrations in Eagle Grove, Denison, Marshalltown, Ottumwa, Sioux City, Storm Lake and Waterloo.
