Severe weather in SC: NWS: Tornado confirmed in Chesnee, Boiling Springs area

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down in Chesnee Monday night. 

"We don't know how strong the tornado was but we're getting a lot of reports of trees down and damage to buildings," said Clay Chaney, a NWS meteorologist at Greenville-Spartanburg. 

Chaney said the reports of damage are coming from Parris Bridge Road, Casey Creek Road and Sandy Fort Road in the Chesnee area. Damage could be seen around the property of View Church on Parris Bridge Road.

Spartanburg County Emergency Management posted this map where there were reports of damage in the Chesnee area after Monday night's storm.

Spartanburg County Emergency Management posted on its Facebook account at 8:30 p.m.: "Emergency Services has ESA Chief 91, Fire Coordinator Chief 91, HazMat Chief 91, and Emergency Management 291 assisting on-scene at possible tornado touchdown in the Cooley Springs/Chesnee/Boiling Springs Area with EOC Support Staff in place. Please reference the attached map and avoid impacted areas."

The tornado watch ended for Spartanburg County at 9 p.m. A steady rainfall continued well into Monday night.

Chaney said a storm survey crew will access the storm-damaged area Tuesday or Wednesday to determine the strength of the tornado.
