It was a wet and cold end to the month of April in eastern Iowa. Cedar Rapids saw more than three inches total with just over a half inch falling the last week.
For Chris Prizler, this wasn't good news. As a farmer in Oxford, he typically plants his corn and soybeans towards the end of April. Last year, he finished planting all crops by May 9th. This year, he started planting after May 9th.
"Lately it's been very beneficial that it hasn't rained. Earlier, it was raining everyday. It was very cold, so we didn't plant any corn early like some others had," he said.
With significant rainfall once again on the horizon, Prizler is working to finish planting as soon as possible. Although the pattern has been active, he says all rain is welcome on his farm. Most of Johnson County remains in a D0 (abnormally dry) level.
"The mud holes that we usually fight, even with the rains that we've had, we're driving right through them this year. The ground moisture, the sub soil moisture, I think is still not adequate. We're really looking forward to this rain tomorrow (Tuesday)," said Prizler.
Tuesday and Wednesday are calling for rain amounts between 0.5-1" near Oxford. Prizler says he isn't concerned about flooding at this time.
"We've had to reshape some waterways and what not, so heavy rain we never want. We love half inch to inch rains that take all day," he said.
The best time to see steady rainfall is towards the end of June into July. Prizler hopes that pattern carries through.
