Josh Donaldson is on the COVID IL, but has also been suspended one game and fined by Major League Baseball for saying “Hey Jackie,” a reference to Jackie Robinsons, to Whiter Sox shortstop Tim Anderson on Saturday.
The remark, which Anderson said Donaldson said to him multiple times, led to an altercation and the benches emptying one week after they emptied when Donaldson placed a hard tag on Anderson at first base.
Donaldson said after Saturday’s game that the remark was a playful jab and an inside joke about a 2019 story in which Anderson said he felt like he could be the next Jackie Robinson and bring change to the game. Anderson and his teammates clearly didn’t agree.
Donaldson will appeal.
