Tierney says Mets need to add a bat, and preferably soon

The Mets are sitting comfortably in first place in the otherwise underperforming NL East, have the third highest team batting average in all of baseball and the sixth most runs scored, but Brandon Tierney says the team needs to add a bat, and quickly.

“I think most Met fans believe they need a bat,” Tierney said during Monday’s show.

“You can sit there and say, ‘They’re eight [games] up, largest divisional lead in baseball,’ I know all that. But if the Mets are going to be inclined to make a big move, and I am of the mindset that they will, go do it now.”

To be fair to BT, the Mets are outside the top 20 in home runs so far this season, and with the majority of run production in the playoffs coming via the long ball, adding another home run threat would certainly bring them closer to a perennial World Series contender.

The next challenge would be finding that type of bat that would be available on the trade market, especially right now, before Memorial Day. Juan Soto was rumored to be a potential candidate with the Nationals being “motivated” to move the generational superstar, but a trade within the division for a perennial MVP candidate seems very unlikely, and other reports have followed debunking the idea that Washington is going to move Soto. Xander Bogaerts is another big bat that has come up in trade rumors due to a standstill with the Red Sox in terms of a contract extension, but Boston has begun to play better of late, and the Mets already have a load of money committed to the shortstop position in Francisco Lindor.

Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates could be another if Pittsburgh continues to show no progress with its current rebuild, and decides to further stock the farm system.

Whomever may be available, BT says the Mets would need to act fast and solidify their place atop the division.

“Whomever they bring in, give them a period to adjust to this team and this market,” Tierney said. “Don’t just parachute him in in late August, get him now if you think you can. Push it. bury the Phillies, bury people.”
