The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to gain some ground on the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, but their latest injury update could make that goal more difficult to accomplish. The Cardinals were dealt some unfortunate injury blows, both to the starting rotation and the outfield. According to an announcement from the team, starting pitcher Steven Matz and outfielder Dylan Carlson are both set for stints on the Injured List.
LHP Steven Matz (left shoulder impingement) has been placed on the 15-day IL.
OF Dylan Carlson (left hamstring strain) has been placed on the 10-day IL, retroactive to May 22.
RHP Angel Rondón has been optioned to Memphis (AAA).

Matz was placed on the 15-day IL with what the team is describing as left shoulder impingement. The injury will cost him at least two weeks but it's possible he's sidelined longer while he looks to get back to full strength. Matz, 30, has struggled in his first season since joining the Cardinals. Thus far into the year, Matz has logged a 6.03 ERA across 9 starts, striking out 44 batters in 37.1 innings.
Carlson's injury is another big loss. The outfielder has featured in 39 games this season and was slashing /.247/.291/.363 with 2 home runs and 11 RBI. Once touted as one of the Cardinals' top prospects, Carlson hasn't quite lived up to the hype thus far, but has been solid in St. Louis in 2022.
In an additional roster move, reliever Angel Rondon was demoted to Triple-A Memphis, while Junior Fernandez, Matthew Liberatore, and Lars Nootbaar were all brought up to the big leagues.
It's a significant roster shuffle for the Cardinals as they've been bit hard by the injury bug, but hopefully neither Matz nor Carlson will require an extended stay on the shelf.
