5 people shot at memorial service on Cleveland’s East Side

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Five people were shot during a memorial service on the city’s East Side in broad daylight on May 23, Cleveland Police confirmed.

According to authorities, the shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. in the area of E. 152nd Street and St. Clair Avenue.

This is in the city’s Collinwood Nottingham neighborhood.

A 37-year-old woman, who was shot in the buttock, was transported to University Hospital by EMS, according to Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia of the Cleveland Police Department.

A 28-year-old man, who was shot in the back; a 33-year-old man, who was shot in the knee; a 56-year-old woman, who was shot in the leg; and a 35-year-old man, who was shot twice in the back, were all driven in a car to University Hospitals separately, Sgt. Ciaccia confirmed.

Police said, “witnesses gave varying accounts of what happened, but all victims were at the venue when an unknown person opened fire on the crowd.”

Cleveland police said there is no description of the suspect at this time.

19 News obtained two 911 calls from the Cuyahoga Emergency Communications System.

“Get the police up here on 152nd,” a male caller told dispatchers. “Hurry up!”

A hysterical female caller suggested her mother had been caught in the crossfire. Both calls can be heard in their entirety below:

Early Monday night, a woman near the crime scene told 19 News she and her son were inside a vehicle at a nearby intersection when the shooting happened.

“It was just a ring of gunfire,” she said. “Big bullets, little bullets, big guns, little guns... it was continuous, nonstop.”

Police said a cash reward of up to $5,000 may be available for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.
