MACON, Ga. (WGXA) -- A solar farm that would have been spread across hundreds of acres in South Bibb has been declined.
Macon-Bibb Planning & Zoning turned town the proposed solar plant in its May 23 meeting.
The applicant, Venus Solar, had hoped to build a 779-acre solar farm across multiple properties:
- 5724 Mt. Pleasant Church Rd.
- 5826 Dove Dr.
- 6250 Shines Rd.
- 6230 Fulton Mill Rd.
- 5607 Hartley Bridge Rd.
Some of those who live in the area showed up to Monday's meeting to speak out against the proposed facility and said they were pleased with the outcome. Some of the neighbors had banded together to sign a petition against the solar farm, says Helen Rutledge.
Rutledge said the farm "would have had a great impact on me."
She said some of her biggest concerns were erosion, loss of wildlife habitat, and having increased noise from the local gun club with cutting the trees down.
Shelly Wade said she and her came together, decided what they wanted, and won.
"I'm very elated. We've worked hard. We didn't want this solar farm in our neighborhoods," she said. "It was going to be surrounded by residential areas to the north, south, east, and west,"
Wade said her biggest concern was an impact on property values.
"They're planning on being there - or we're planning - for 35 years. That's a long time, and no one wants their homes connected to a solar farm," she said. "I hope that they do find the right place, just not in our neighborhood."
