Virgil residents call redistricting proposal a ‘shame’

CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) — Residents in the town of Virgil are voicing concern over a proposed redistricting law.

The law would shuffle districts in Cortland County into 17 sections. Virgil would be split into three districts.

At a public hearing Thursday, town resident Paul Petrella called the proposal a “shame” because his neighbors across the street would fall in a different district. He wants Virgil to be whole.

Town Supervisor John Kaminski also called for Virgil to be one district.

Legislator Cathy Bischoff explained how that can happen.

As part of the law, each of the 17 districts would have a legislator.

County officials meet Thursday to further discuss the proposal.
