The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity announced late last week that Kankakee County has been selected for the Accelerated Illinois Broadband Infrastructure Planning Program. Kankakee County Board Chairman Andy Wheeler says the program will help determine what is needed to put the rural parts of Kankakee County on a more level footing when it comes to broadband internet service

Wheeler adds the study will help determine how much and what kinds of infrastructure would be needed to provide high-speed internet to the entire county

The IDCEO says the 14-week process will better position the county to “effectively leverage newly available state and federal broadband infrastructure funding”. The local effort is being headed by County Board member and Farm Bureau Manager Chad Miller
