SAULT STE. MARIE — Sault High celebrated Senior Day with a sweep over the Brimley Bays Saturday at James Field.

The Blue Devils won 6-1 and 15-0 over the Bays in a Straits Area Conference baseball doubleheader.

In the opener, the Blue Devils scored three runs in the first inning and that would be all pitchers Garrett Gorsuch and Ethan Adair would need. Gorsuch started on the mound and took the win, limiting the Bays to one run on two hits, while striking out five and walking two in five innings. Adair worked one inning and gave up one run on one hit and one walk.

Avery Wilson hit a triple and drove in two runs, while Matt Lumsden had a double and single and Michael Bontrager added two singles. Ian Earl added a double, and Jakob Davie and Jonah DeNuccio-McShane had singles.

“I thought the kids played pretty well,” Sault High coach Kris Bontrager said. “Again pitching and defense led the way. Garrett and Jonah both did a very nice job on the mound. I thought we struggled a little bit offensively though. I mean you got to give their pitcher some of the credit. But I just felt like there was a lack of intensity not only in our at bats but also running the bases. Things we have to get cleaned up by next week.”

The Blue Devils completed the sweep with a 15-0 win over the Bays in four innings in Game 2.

Sault High scored in every inning and compiled nine hits. Denvy McCord and DeNuccio-McShane were both 2-for-3. Wilson hit a double, while Gorsuch, Odin Medrick, Dominic Haller and Matt Lumsden also had hits.

DeNuccio-McShane started and pitched three innings for the win, allowing no runs on two hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. Davie pitched one inning and struck out two.

Sault seniors include Jakob Davie, Jonah DeNuccio-McShane, Ian Earl, Dryden Bergeron and Jack Bachand.

“It was really nice to be able to send the seniors off with a couple wins on senior day,” Bontrager said. “That group of kids has been incredibly important to the program. I am incredibly proud of them and the leadership they are providing the team this year. They have really all stepped into roles. That is a big part of why we're having a successful season.

“This is a group that is going to be really hard to say goodbye to at the end of the year. These kids were freshman when I took over the program. So to be able to get to know them for four years and watch them develop, not just as players but as young men, it is truly special and an honor to be a part of. Now we just got to find a way to go on a run so we can keep them around a little longer.”

Sault High (16-10-2 overall) is scheduled to host the Soo Black Sox Tuesday.
