LOS ANGELES (KNX) – The man accused of attacking comedian Dave Chappelle revealed in an exclusive interview with The New York Post about why he ran on stage.
Isaiah Lee, 23, told the outlet he was angered by the comedian’s jokes on the LGBTQ community and homelessness.
“I identify as bisexual … and I wanted (Chappelle) to know what he said was triggering,” he said, adding that he never intended to hurt Chappelle.
“I wanted him to know that next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect.”
Lee, who gave the interview from jail, said the breaking point came when another comedian during the show joked about pedophilia, which Lee said triggered his own memories about being molested as a teen while at the Department of Children and Family Services in Los Angeles.
Lee also confirmed he had the retractable hand-gun knife on him, that he did not have it out onstage with him. He claimed he carries the knife for protection.
During the interview, he also revealed he was single father of a five-year-old boy and he was working on securing a place to live prior to the Hollywood Bowl incident.

Lee also confirmed Chappelle’s story that the two spoke after the attack. Chappelle told the audience at Los Angeles’ Comedy Store days after the attack that Lee said his grandmother was being kicked out of her neighborhood because of gentrification and he wanted to shed light on that.
Lee; however, told The New York Post that he told the comedian that Lee’s mother and grandmother “would be upset” at what Chappelle said. Lee did not mention in the interview his grandmother being kicked out of her neighborhood.
Lee did not bring up the recent attempted murder charges he received last week from the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office in connection to a December incident, in which Lee was accused of stabbing his roommate at a transitional housing apartment.
On May 5, Lee pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charges given to him by the L.A. City Attorney’s Office for the Hollywood Bowl attack.
Lee’s pretrial hearing was rescheduled for June 2. He was ordered to stay away from Chappelle, as well as the Hollywood Bowl.
He remains behind bars.
