Chad Green will have the next few months to ponder his future, as the right-hander will have Tommy John surgery sometime soon, and may have thrown his last pitch as a Yankee.

These days, Tommy John rehab lasts about 12-16 months for most pitchers (perhaps the lower end for relievers), but Green won’t return to the mound until likely the second half of 2023 at the earliest – he just doesn’t know where, since he will be a free agent this winter.

Jordan Montgomery, Zack Britton, and Luis Severino are all in the Yankees’ clubhouse and all have gone through the process, so surely, Green (and maybe Luis Gil, who will also undergo the procedure this week) is (or will be) picking their brains about it…which led Sevy to quip this one-liner when asked about Green and his own rehab after Sunday’s start:

“Man, I was trying to think about anything else but baseball. I had a long time to think about it,” he joked, lamenting how a series of injuries (including Tommy John and rehab) cost him most of 2019, 2020, and 2021.

So, what did Sevy do?

“Oh, man…I bought a guitar, I learned a foreign language, lots of things,” Sevy said. “I hired a teacher and learned Italian.”

Perhaps Chad Green can take a page out of that book and become Chad Verde or Chad Verdi if you will, although the guitar might be a little more of a late-rehab item?
