Man charged with attempted murder after shooting at vehicles in Spartanburg Co.

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A man has been charged following two separate shootings Saturday morning in Spartanburg County.

According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 12:30 a.m. to the area of Highway 101 South and Highway 417 in reference to a disturbance with weapons.

“We had a victim call in saying he had been shot at by another subject in another vehicle,” said Lt. Kevin Bobo with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, one of the victim’s was traveling down Reidville Road near Highway 101 when he saw a grey vehicle parked on the side of the road.

The driver said he got closer to the man and saw that he was holding a gun and that is when the man started shooting at the his vehicle.

The victim told deputies that he did not know the suspect or why he would shoot at him.

The victim did not suffer any injuries but deputies noticed the driver’s side back tire was flat with a bullet-sized hole in the tire, the incident report said.

A short time later, deputies said a second caller alerted them of a similar incident nearby Highway 101 South and Highway 417.

“Another victim saw a guy standing outside of his car and I think kind of slowed down a little bit to see if he was having car trouble and the same suspect started shooting at him,” said Bobo.

Deputies said the victims were able to provide a description of the vehicle the suspect was driving along with a partial license plate number, which led to the arrest of 40-year-old Joseph Dmitriel Stinson of Woodruff.

Stinson is charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He is currently being held in the Spartanburg County Detention Center without bond.

Deputies said a motive is stull unknown at this time.

“Something as random as that, as best we can tell, neither victim has had any interaction with the suspect. It’s totally random,” said Bobo.

The Sheriff’s Office told 7NEWS they are grateful no one was hurt.

“One thing we are thankful about is neither one of these citizens were injured,” said Bobo.

Deputies believe there may be a third victim that encountered Mr. Stinson on Saturday. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.
