Richard Leon is the proud new renter of a yellow home on the corner of Avenue 16 and Raymond Road in Madera.

"You know what they say, 'A home is what you make it inside.' Now that I'm out here, just sitting out here waiting, and see what I've seen it's the traffic that bothers me. It worries me a lot," said Leon.

The 69-year-old retired concrete construction worker is concerned for the safety of his family with the recent uptick in accidents and deaths along an unincorporated part of the city.

"I come out here and check the mail and it really concerns me, it really does," said Leon.

He has lived in Madera for the past five years and says speed is ongoing issue in his neighborhood.

"I see the way the cars drive around here and it's just crazy. They come through here, northbound on Raymond Road and they wind up here on Avenue 16 which is right in front of my house. And, you know, you can hear the screeching on the tires -- they're just shooting right through," said Leon.

The crash happened around 5:00 a.m. on Raymond Rd. south of Road 28 in an unincorporated part of Madera County.

According to officers, the man riding the Huffy Beach Cruiser was heading northbound on the west dirt shoulder. The driver was traveling southbound, made an unsafe turn, and lost control causing the car to swerve off the road and onto the dirt shoulder hitting the bicyclist. The driver who hit the bicyclist did not stop.

The bicyclist was thrown from the bike and dying from his injuries at the scene.

Another missing safety measure -- traffic lights.

"The cars that go around this turn here, they do every bit of 50, 60 miles per hour. You can hear the wheels screeching," said Leon.

Monday's accident left nearby families on Raymond Rd. and Avenue 28 on edge.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Madera California Highway Patrol at (559) 675-1025.
