Kylian Mbappe breaks silence on Real Madrid transfer snub and vows to support them in Champions League final

KYLIAN MBAPPE has revealed he will support Real Madrid in the Champions League final this weekend.

That is despite rejecting a move to the Spanish champions and signing a lucrative new deal with Paris Saint-Germain to keep him at the club until 2025.

The news to stay at PSG was confirmed before their final Ligue 1 game of the season.

He is expected to earn a staggering £507million by the end of his three-year deal.

And now Mbappe has broken his silence on his decision to snub Madrid by insisting he will be cheering for them against Liverpool in Paris on Saturday.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, he said: “I’ll be Real Madrid’s first supporter for UCL final in Paris, my house.

"I’d like to thank Real and Florentino Perez. I understand their disappointment.

“I understand honour and privilege to be wanted by an institution such as Real Madrid."

The news of Mbappe's decision to stay at PSG was confirmed prior to their final Ligue 1 game of the season.

Having already clinched the title several weeks earlier, the French champions put on a show in the capital as they thumped Metz 5-0 at the Parc des Princes.

And Mbappe capped another thoroughly successful campaign with a hat-trick.

Explaining his decision to stay at PSG in the press conference on Monday, he said: “Everybody knows I wanted to leave last year, and I was convinced that would be the best decision at the time. The years pass but they are different, and the context is different now. That goes for sporting terms, and also, personally.

“I was free to make a decision and I know how important that is here in France. It is the country where I have grown up, I have always lived here, and leaving my country wasn’t the right thing.

“There is a sentimental aspect to this. It is my country. The sporting project has changed as well. That made me want to stay here because I don’t think my story is over yet. That goes for collectively and individually.”

He continued: “I made my decision last week. I didn’t tell my teammates because the club didn’t want me to. We wanted to keep it a secret and for it to be a surprise. Although there are not many surprises. I think you guys found out the info.

“I made the decision before the call with Florentino Perez. I have lots of respect for him and for Real Madrid. They wanted to do a lot for me and make me happy, so I thank them for that, but as I am respectful, I wanted to speak to him personally. We had a close relationship so I thought that was the best thing to do.

“We then wanted to get the contract sorted and announce it at the Parc des Princes. The players found out on the TV in the dressing room.”

“Something I have learned in football is that you should just look ahead of you but not too fat ahead. A year ago, I didn’t think I would be sitting here in front of you. Now I have signed my new contract. I have made a personal decision which I feel is best for me, I am not looking too far ahead.

“I’m just looking at my new contract and focusing on this new project, this new era for the club, and I don’t know what will happen in the future.”

Mbappe finished the season with 39 goals in 46 appearances and was named the Ligue 1 Player of the Year for a third time.

No player has won the award more times since it was first dished out in 1994, with Mbappe and Zlatan Ibrahimovic the only individuals to claim it three times.

Meanwhile, Madrid are seeking a record-extending 14th European title this weekend, while Liverpool are going for a seventh.

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti will become the first manager to win the trophy on four occasions if he can lead his side to victory in Paris.
