Sheriff's department adds marine deputies

Staff report

In April, Ronald Sprowls and Steve Houk, of the Branch County Sheriff’s Department, attended the Marine Training Academy held at the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

During their week of training, Sprowls and Houk spent time learning defensive tactics (Jiu-Jitsu), drown proofing and water rescue, and more to keep Branch County residents safe on the water this summer. A total of 68 members from different law enforcement agencies throughout the state attended the training.

Sprowls and Houk join nine other marine patrol deputies, for a total of 11 at the Branch County Sheriff's Department. They are fully deputized and empowered to make arrests for drunken driving, reckless driving and operating under the influence of drugs. Deputies are also charged with enforcing the marine navigation laws, including proper flotation devices, proper vessel operation, lighting, emergency equipment and state certified drivers.

The Marine Patrol deputies also help lead boater safety classes in Branch County. To register for an upcoming boater safety course, visit CountyofBranch.com/Sheriff and click on Boater Safety Classes.
