Emmy-winning and Tony-nominated Danny DeVito will be in Vermont this summer for a one-night-only staged reading of a play presented by the Dorset Theatre Festival.

The star of TV shows such as “Taxi” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and movies including “Throw Momma From the Train” will take part in a staged reading in southern Vermont of “I Need That” by Emmy-nominated writer Theresa Rebeck.

Joining DeVito in the cast will be Lucy DeVito — who has also appeared on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and is DeVito’s daughter with actress Rhea Perlman — and Broadway actor Ray Anthony Thomas. The staged reading will be directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel, best known for directing the Broadway play “Hand to God” that received five Tony Award nominations.

Rebeck is the Dorset Theatre Festival’s resident playwright. She earned two Emmy nominations in the 1990s for her writing for the TV show “NYPD Blue.”

“I have learned that Danny DeVito is the proverbial national treasure,” Rebeck said in a news release from Dorset Theatre Festival. “I’m thrilled to be working with him and his daughter, Lucy, who shares his talent, his heart and his humor.”

Danny DeVito earned a Tony Award nomination in 2017 for his work in the Arthur Miller play “The Price” on Broadway. He’s known for his fondness for Vermont, or at least a couple of its best-known exports. He is an ardent Bernie Sanders supporter and was spotted at the “final” concerts Phish presented before their breakup (and eventual re-formation) in Coventry in 2004.
