Harlan girls honor their late coach at State track
During the Iowa high school state track meet, the Harlan girls finished fifth in the Distance Medley Relay, but for them it was a win.
The relay team of Kami Stork, Sammie Ineson, Lilly Metzger and Kaia Bieker got their best time ever. And they did it for their former coach, Bill Hosack, who died two years ago from brain cancer.
The team wore red and white ribbons in his honor.
Their new coach, Jenny Hamilton, is Bill Hosack's daughter. She just finished an emotional first season with new memories at State.
"It means a lot to me. They're really special girls. This is my first year back coaching in Harlan. It's awesome to return to the program and build on something that he cared so much about. And I know he would have just loved the group we're working with. It means a lot. They mean a lot to me and I know if he was here they would mean a lot to him as well," Hamilton said.
And now the Harlan girls are running their hearts out for their old coaches' daughter. The ribbons were a simple gesture, but it meant the world to Hamilton.
"[It's] something that I think they knew would mean something to me. They know I miss him a lot," Hamilton said.
