A new Blue Star Memorial at the New Bern National Cemetery pays tribute to the armed forces that defended our country.
Organizers will uncover the memorial during an unveiling ceremony at the cemetery on Tuesday, May 24, at 11 AM.
Organizers said the ceremony will feature a presentation of colors, the national anthem, speakers, and a military tribute by musician Big Jim Kohler.
Garden Clubs across the United States sponsor Blue Star Memorial markers that honor the armed forces and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
"I think they get honored for Christmas and for memorial day with the little flags, but isn't it nice; this is going to be a permanent tribute," said Paula Hartman, State of NC Blue Star Chair. "75 hundred servicemen and women buried here, and they've all lost their lives, sacrificed their lives for this country. And, I think that's what makes this important."
The name 'Blue Star Memorial' was chosen for the stars on flags displayed in homes and businesses that represented a family member's service during World War II.
The marker at the New Bern National Cemetery was sponsored by the Trent Woods Garden Club with help from the other organizations.
