Aaron Boone: Matt Blake's ejection in Game 2 vs. White Sox 'such an overreaction'

Apparently, it was just a misunderstood comment that led to Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake getting ejected from Game 2 of Sunday’s doubleheader in the third inning:

Replays clearly show the ball hit Tim Anderson’s leg in the box, which would make it a foul ball, but the play is not reviewable and so the umpires’ call stood.

So, too, did home plate umpire Greg Gibson’s ejection of Blake for calling him out on it, which manager Aaron Boone was not happy about after the game.

“Such an overreaction,” manager Aaron Boone said after what became a 5-0 Yankees loss in the nightcap. “Just a misunderstood comment. He said, ‘you missed it,’ which he did. That’s okay! But then it’s here we come, now I’m going to compound that mistake with the sheriff in town.”

Thanks to a quick Jomboy breakdown, you can read lips on the exchange between Gibson and Blake where the home plate ump believed the pitching coach alluded to some vision issues:

Well, Boone had to speak with ESPN’s Buster Olney shortly after it happened as part of the network’s usual in-game interview with skippers, and he said the explanation he got was “not a good one.”

“He thought Blake said something to him that he didn’t and there was just a quick trigger after obviously a play we can’t challenge,” Boone said on the broadcast. “You understand they’re not gonna get them all, but just an overreaction.”

It was Blake’s second ejection as Yankees pitching coach, although at first, Boone thought it might be himself who got the gate.

“I didn’t really say much, so I thought maybe a chance it was me,” Boone said, “but then I figured it was probably Blake, but I knew he didn’t day much. Such an overreaction.”

This is also the second time in a week the Yankees have taken issues with a home plate umpire missing calls, after Anthony Rizzo was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in Thursday’s loss to Baltimore – another situation where the Yankees were correct, but blue had the last word.
