Some of these memes are absolutely brutal.

Football fans have wasted no time in laying into Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard following his side's defeat to Manchester City.

Villa threw away a 2-0 lead on the final day of the season, conceding three goals in less than six minutes against City.

The defeat not only meant that Pep Guardiola's team clinched the Premier League title, but it also brought Liverpool's quadruple dreams to an end.

Gerrard, being the Merseyside legend that he is, ultimately found himself in the firing line from online trolls who couldn't wait to start churning out brutal memes directed at the Villa boss.

Of course, the majority of the comments reference him "slipping" again.

Some of these are absolutely savage – even Liam Gallagher piled in!

Throughout his storied career at Liverpool, Gerrard steered the team to one of the greatest come-from-behind victories in football history against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul.

However, in his 504 appearances as a Red, he wasn't able to guide the club to a Premier League trophy.

So this season, when Liverpool's title chances were reliant upon a Villa victory over City on the final day, all eyes turned to Gerrard as the perfect script was on the brink of completion.

Unfortunately for Reds fans though, and probably Gerrard himself, Aston Villa weren't able to get the job done meaning Liverpool's quadruple hopes were sent crashing down.

As for Pep Guardiola, he has somewhat made up for his recent European failures by helping deliver a fourth Premier League title in five years to the sky blue side of Manchester.
