In the middle of the first inning on Sunday, the Giants announced that they’ve placed first baseman Brandon Belt on the 10-day injured list with right knee inflammation.

The move is retroactive to May 19, meaning Belt can return on May 29 at the earliest. Before the game, manager Gabe Kapler said he considered Belt “day-to-day.”

Belt got his knee drained on Friday, was scratched from the lineup Saturday, then excluded from the starting nine Sunday. When Kapler spoke with reporters pregame, he said he hadn’t yet checked in with the veteran.

Sunday is the third straight game in which Belt has been absent, but it won’t be the last.

In 26 games for the Giants this year, Belt is hitting .228 with four home runs — all of which came in April.

In Belt’s place, the Giants recalled Kevin Padlo from Triple-A Sacramento. Padlo, who was acquired from Seattle earlier this year, is hitting .291 for the River Cats. He made his Giants debut in the first week of May.
