Grocery-chain Meijer is facing some payment processing issues.
Several customers reported online that stores were facing issues paying with credit cards.
A Grove City couple reached out to ABC6/FOX28 after they said their card was charged to its limit after shopping at Meijer on Saturday. Bethany Covert said she was helping out a neighbor who needed baby formula.
"It’s a weird story because of the formula shortage. My neighbor had called me because her friend had run out of formula and the formula was back-ordered, but we found out they had it at the Meijer in Grove City."
As the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished. On Sunday morning, Covert said she woke up to dozens of charges on her card adding up to over $200.
"Since four in the morning they had been charging my card for random amounts," she said. "It would be 10 cents, $12, $4 until there was nothing left."
Luckily Covert said her card had a limit, but her bank told her even after her limit was hit, attempted charges continued.
"I called my bank and they said that while we were on the phone Meijer was still trying to charge my account but it was declining the charges because I as at my limit."
Bethany said she sat on hold with Meijer's support center for over three hours on Sunday. An employee told her she would likely have her money back within 10 business days.
"We are in a really bad time and people are living paycheck to paycheck," Covert said. "They don’t just have money like that for people just to hit their account all night long while they are sleeping."
“We are currently experiencing issues with payment processing — thank you for your patience as we work to quickly resolve this,” a message on the store's website said Sunday.
WSYX reached out to Michigan-based Meijer for comment on the disruption but has not heard back. The customer service line played an automated message saying they are aware of the issue.
"We are aware of current issues affecting some customers that could result in multiple charges."
The store said they are working to reverse the charges and to contact your bank if the charges remain.
A company representative reportedly told a Michigan news outlet that recent storms damaged several data systems. Customers have reported some card payment issues at other retailers.
