Two people died in separate accidents over the weekend, including a wreck in Flagler County on Saturday where a Bunnell police officer tried to rescue a woman whose car went into a pond, authorities said.

And early Sunday in Volusia County, troopers said a man hit by a vehicle that left the scene near Osteen was later hit by a second vehicle, Florida Highway Patrol investigators said.

Car in pond

Bunnell police and the Florida Highway Patrol received a call at 10:01 p.m. on Saturday about a reckless driver at Grand Reserve Drive east of Fairway Court in the Grand Reserve subdivision.

Bunnell police responded and about 10 minutes later found a vehicle submerged in a pond with its taillights visible near the surface, police said.

The car was occupied by a 77-year-old woman, troopers said.

Bunnell police said the responding officer entered the water to rescue the woman, breaking a rear window.

The officer cleared away the glass with his bare hands, cutting himself, but was not able to reach the elderly woman, police said.

Flagler County deputies and firefighters arrived on scene and removed the woman from the car. The woman was transported to AdventHealth Palm Coast where she was pronounced dead, Bunnell police said.

The identity of the woman is not being released until her family is notified, Bunnell police said.

The Bunnell officer was treated for cuts and released from the hospital, the department stated in a news release.

FHP continues to investigate the crash.

Man hit in Osteen

The second fatality occurred near Osteen in Volusia County early Sunday when a 48-year-old man was hit and killed, FHP investigators said.

The incident occurred on Lemon Bluff Road near State Road 415 at 3:40 a.m., troopers said.

The Osteen man had initially been hit by a vehicle that left the scene and was lying in the eastbound lane of Lemon Bluff Road when a second vehicle ran him over, investigating troopers said.

The driver of the second vehicle reported seeing the man in the road and swerved to avoid the pedestrian, but the front of the vehicle ran over the man, troopers said.

The driver of the second vehicle was not inured, FHP said.

Troopers are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information on the vehicle that fled the scene to call 407-737-2213.

Troopers continue to investigate the Osteen crash.
