Fetterman discharged from hospital, will continue to ‘rest and recover’

Pennsylvania Lt. Governor John Fetterman was discharged Sunday from the hospital where he was being treated following a stroke.

A week ago, the 52-year-old Fetterman announced he suffered a stroke May 13 caused by atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heartbeat that’s potentially serious but treatable.

On Sunday, Fetterman said he was heading back to Braddock from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital, where his treatment included surgery to install a pacemaker.

“I want to take a moment and thank everyone; Gisele, myself, and the kids have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from folks across the commonwealth. Thank you everyone so much for having our backs and supporting us through this,” Fetterman said in a released statement. “I am feeling great, but per my doctor’s orders, and Gisele’s orders, I am going to continue to rest and recover. Later this week I will have a follow-up visit with my doctors at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital.”

Fetterman also spoke about continuing his campaigning, after winning the Democratic nomination for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat. Republican Sen. Pat Toomey is retiring.

The Republican race between celebrity heart surgeon Mehmet Oz and former hedge fund CEO David McCormick has been too close to call and will likely head for a statewide recount to decide the winner, The Associated Press reported.

Fetterman underwent surgery for a pacemaker with a defibrillator Tuesday afternoon, on Primary Election Day. He voted by emergency absentee ballot from the hospital.
