Strong pitching propels Triton Central to Shelby County Tournament title

Triton Central captured the Shelby County Softball Tournament title Saturday with wins over Morristown and Waldron.

In the semifinal round, Triton Central scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 12-2 victory over Morristown (9-10) in Fairland.

Brylie Couch had two hits and drove in two runs for Triton Central. Madison Collins had four runs batted in.

Couch earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out eight in a five-inning performance.

Rhylee Moran took the loss for the Yellow Jackets. She allowed eight hits and seven walks.

Alexia Rogers went 2-for-3 for Morristown.

In the championship game, the Tigers scored in five of the six innings to defeat Waldron (3-11).

Couch went 3-for-4 in the win. Allison Raquet, Lillian Fillippinie and Jazmin Jett each had two hits for Triton Central (10-9).

Fillippinie did not allow a hit and struck out 13 Mohawks.

Triton Central opens Class 2A, Sectional 42 Tuesday against Scecina (6-9) at Eastern Hancock. The winner advances to the sectional championship game Thursday.

Morristown enters the postseason Tuesday in a semifinal contest against Greenwood Christian (4-6) at Indianapolis Lutheran.

Waldron earned a first-round bye and will face the winner of the Lutheran (8-14) and Edinburgh (11-11) quarterfinal game on Wednesday.

The Lutheran Sectional championship game is Thursday.
