(KSLA) — Throughout the ArkLaTex, thousands of residents awoke to darkness following storms overnight.

SWEPCO crews are working to restore power to affected areas. Hardest hit were Texarkana, Shreveport and Kilgore, according to a news release.

Severe storms with high winds and lightning brought down trees, utility poles and power lines, SWEPCO reports.

Authorities say utilities in two separate buildings were damaged when lightning twice struck Beacon Point, an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Arkansas Boulevard in Texarkana, Ark. The strikes affected eight apartments. No injuries were reported.

At the peak, 13,000 customers were without power at 3 a.m. Sunday. As of 9 a.m., about 8,600 still remain without power. That number was down to 2,319 by 4 p.m.

The company expects power to be restored by Sunday night.
