Xbox Owners Reportedly Set To Get Popular PlayStation 4 Feature

Xbox Owners Reportedly Set To Get Popular PlayStation 4 Feature

A new customisation app is reportedly being worked on at Microsoft, which may eventually be launched as an Xbox update.

This is a strange one. Xbox owners will reportedly soon receive a popular PlayStation 4 feature and not only that, they’ll receive it before the feature has even come to the PlayStation 5. Weird.

The Xbox Series X/S shortage finally seems to have drawn to a close. In fact, the Xbox Series S recently outsold the PlayStation 5 in Japan for the first time in its history. As more people get their hands on a console, so too have Microsoft been ramping up their update efforts - and it looks like a fun new feature is on the cards.

A popular feature of the PlayStation 4 was that users were able to customise the console’s homepage using themes. Now, PlayStation 5 users can only choose from a selection of fairly basic backgrounds. Themes went one step further, overhauling the console’s UI with designs based on your favourite games. Personally, I remember loving the simplicity of the Assassin's Creed Origins gold and black theme.

Currently on the Xbox Series X/S, you can either select a background from the console’s basic range or use an in-game screenshot, but there are no themes. Twitter user ALumia_Italia claims that that could soon change as Microsoft is reportedly working on an Xbox app that will allow users to create their own themes.

Themes were great for bringing a sense of ambience to your console. In particular, the Resident Evil franchise had a great range of themes that started up that uneasy feeling in your stomach before you even launched a game.

ALumia_Italia shared a gif of the reported app which appeared to be called Xbox Dynamic Backgrounds Editor. The app seems to be more advanced than the PlayStation 4 system, allowing Xbox users to completely create their own theme from scratch. As with all rumours, this has to be taken with a pinch of salt. PlayStation 5, it’s your turn to catch up now.
