Family members have identified the six-year-old boy whose body was found in the trunk of a car during a traffic stop in Mound, Minnesota.
The boy was identified as Eli Hart, and his death is being investigated as a domestic incident.
Eli's mother was taken into custody and is expected to be charged this week. Family members reported that the child's father had been attempting to win custody of him at the time of his death, the Associated Press reported.
Court records show the mother had recently been awarded full custody of Eli, despite a criminal history, concerns about her mental health, and the boy's foster parents objecting.
The woman's arrest came Friday after Orono police received reports of a car driving on the rim of one of its tires and with the windows smashed out.
The car was stopped in Mound, and after officers noticed blood inside the vehicle, they found the child's body in the trunk.
A man was also arrested in connection with the death and is also expected to be charged this week.
Police have not released details of how the boy died and charges have not been brought agains the man or woman as of Monday morning.
