ELON, N.C. – Elon University baseball came up just short for the second straight game as the Phoenix (25-26, 9-14 CAA) fell 3-2 to William & Mary on Saturday, May 21 at Latham Park. The game marked Senior Day for the maroon and gold as the team recognized

THE RUNDOWN
Both teams scored one run in the second inning. Tyler Solomon reached on an Elon throwing error, moved up to third on a Mark Trotta single through the right side and came home on a Lucas Carmichael base hit to left field. W&M tried to add to its lead with a sacrifice bunt and runners in scoring position, but Frontino fielded the ball and fired to
Luke Stephenson in time to make the play at the plate. The Phoenix answered in its next turn at the plate as Reynolds drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Granatell double to right center. Granatell moved up to third on a
Parker Haskin ground out to short, but was left stranded as Frontino struck out swinging.
The Tribe (26-21, 14-10) retook the lead 2-1 in the third as Matt Thomas tripled down the right-field line and tagged up on a Cole Ragone sacrifice fly to left. W&M then added an insurance run in the fourth as Phil Conti doubled down the left-field line, reached third on an Adam Quintero sac bunt and crossed the plate on a Thomas single to center field.
Alex Iadisernia walks and Reynolds doubled to put runners in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but the Tribe got out of the jam as Granatell and
Connor Offshack both popped up.
Elon got back to within a run in the eighth inning.
Andrew DiMisa pinch hit for
Connor Coolahan and worked a 3-2 count for a base on balls. The freshman from Tampa, Fla. then stole second and took third on a throwing error by the W&M catcher. Stephenson hit a 3-2 pitch deep enough to left for an RBI sac fly and the Phoenix closed the gap, 3-2. The Phoenix was unable to push across any more runs in the eighth and went down in order in the ninth to round out the game.
