Jax State Sweeps Bellarmine To Earn ASUN Tourney Berth

LOUISVILLE, Ky – Senior Cole Frederick did not want his Jacksonville State career to end on Saturday as he delivered a pair of home runs and five RBI to guide the Gamecocks to a sweep of Bellarmine after a 9-3 win to extend his career into the postseason with a berth in the 2022 ASUN Baseball Championship next week in Fort Meyers, Florida.

The Gamecocks finish their first season back in the ASUN at 19-11 and strung together five straight wins over the last two weekend to get in position for the tournament. JSU will open the ASUN Baseball Championship on Tuesday with the first day of pool play. The game time and opponent will be determined after Saturday's final day of the regular season.

Frederick, playing in his 234th career game in a Gamecock uniform, gave his club the lead it would not relinquish with a three0run home run to erase a 2-1 Knights lead in the fifth inning. With the home run, Frederick extended his hitting streak to 16 consecutive games. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama product added his second home run of the day with a solo blast in the eighth inning. His fifth and final RBI came in the ninth as JSU broke open a three-run contest with four runs in the ninth. Frederick pushed sophomore Mason Maners across the plate after Maners cleared the bases with a triple. It was Frederick's 20th multiple hit game of the season and eighth multi-RBI contest.

Frederick played in all 30 ASUN games and finished conference play hitting .325 with 20 RBI, and 14 extra base hits. Maners tallied a team-best .402 average against league foes with 28 RBI. Maners has reached base in 28 straight ASUN outings.

Jax State gave a start to freshman AJ Causey for the first time this season. Causey, the Gamecocks' closer throughout the year, was superb in his first start of the season. He tossed four complete innings and fanned six Knights in the appearance. The two of the three runs BU scored were unearned runs. The trio of freshman Tanner Jones, sophomore Jake Peppers and junior Trey Fortner finished the final five innings. Peppers collected three strikeouts in two-plus innings of work.

Junior Kody Putnam gave JSU an early lead for the third straight day with a solo home run in the third inning. Putnam, playing near his hometown of Evansville, Indiana, posted his second home run of the season. Junior Carson Crowe joined Maners and Frederick with two hits on the day.

More information will be provided by the ASUN later on Saturday or Sunday. All games will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
