Mariners signing All-Star OF Justin Upton to one-year deal

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Seattle Mariners have agreed to a one-year major league deal with veteran outfielder Justin Upton.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim released Upton on April 8.

In the final year of a five-year $106 million contract, the Mariners will pay $550K of Upton's $28 million 2022 salary.

Upton played 89 games for the Angels last season, recording a .211 batting average, .296 on-base percentage and .409 slugging percentage. He finished with 17 home runs and 41 RBIs, with 39 walks in 362 plate appearances.

The three-time Silver Slugger Award winner is seventh among active major leaguers in career home runs (324).

Over 15 seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers and Angels, Upton has played in over 1,800 major league games.

He's posted a career batting average of .262, a .343 on-base percentage and a .471 slugging percentage, with 324 home runs and 1000 RBIs.

Upton may help Seattle if he has anything left in the tank. The Mariners currently have several players out of the lineup due to injury, including outfielders Kyle Lewis and Mitch Haniger.
