Track Roundup: John Glenn girls, Sheridan girls claim district titles

BYESVILLE — The John Glenn girls have been the hunted in the Division II district track and field meet for the past decade at Meadowbrook.

The Muskies outlasted the field again, claiming their eighth district title in nine years with 157 points at the district meet, which was held on Thursday and Saturday.

Steubenville was second with 118 followed by Morgan in third (82). Philo was ninth (25) and Maysville 12th (6).

The top four placers in each event qualified for the regional to be held on Thursday and Saturday at Chillicothe Southeastern.

Jessica Church claimed the 400 (59.45); Brea Wilfong placed first in the 800 (2:26.73); Chelsea Sotherden won the discus (110-0); and Church, Emma Dolan, Wilfong and Abigail Derry placed first in the 4x400 (4:14.01) to lead John Glenn on Saturday. Derry, Wilfong, Laurie Baughman and Grace Lawrence won the 4x800 (10:20) on Thursday.

Derry added a second (5:34) and Wilfong third (5:35) in the 1,600; Derry was third in the 800 (2:27.84); Kara Fields finished second in the 100 hurdles (15.38) and 300 hurdles (49.02); Rebecca Spohn was third in the 3,200 (13:41); Ava Hoffman placed second (5-0) and Raya Taylor fourth (5-0) in the high jump; Brayden Snider came in second (11-6) and Jordan Killiany third (10-6) in the pole vault; Claire Smith was third in the shot (36-7); Marina Nicolozakes was fourth in the 300H (49.21); and Fields, Angela Kumler, Church and Nicolozakes came in fourth in the 4x200 (1:50.0) to also qualify.

Odessa Smith swept the hurdles, 100 (15.34) and 300 (47.48), and took first in the long jump (16-5) to lead the Raider girls. Josie Knierim won the 200 (25.89) and came in second in the 100 (12.43); Emily Pinkerton took third in the 400 (1:00.05); Paige Gorrell, Pinkerton, Smith and Knierim won the 4x200 (1:46.09); and Gorrell, Aleah Bogue, Autumn Garber and Knierim were third in the 4x100 (52.41) to also advance.

The 4x800 of Jenna Lytton, Emily Irvin, Henderson and Emily Keylor was second (11:03) and Darbi Henderson was fourth in the 3,200 (13:50) for the Philo girls, while Karli Sidwell took fourth in the shot (36-5 1/2) to move on for the Maysville girls.

The John Glenn boys were third (77.5), as St. Clairsville won with 100 points and Steubenville was second (90). West Muskingum was 10th (32), Maysville 11th (27), Philo 12th (18) and Morgan 13th (7).

Chris Tooms won the 1,600 (4:31) and 3,200 (9:49) to pace the Muskie boys. He was also part of the second-place 4x800 (8:28) with Carson Clouse, Caiden Lake and Kody Clendenning on Thursday.

Elijah Kuklica took second in the 400 (51.06); Clendenning placed second in the 800 (2:02.3); Clendenning, Cameron House, Asa Kridelbaugh and Chris Russell finished second in the 4x400 (3:34); Kuklica, Kridelbaugh, Stefan Israel and Chase Stephen took third in the 4x200 (1:33.5); and Riley West, Russell, Israel and Stephen were fourth in the 4x100 (44.88) to also qualify for John Glenn.

Rashid Sesay won the 100 (11.12) and Ty Shawger took second in the high jump (5-10) for West M; Codah Bunting placed second in the pole vault (13-0) and Vincent Pratt was fourth in the 300 hurdles (43.1) for Maysville; and Philo's Jaxson Radcliffe came in second in the long jump (20-10 3/4) to round out area qualifiers.

• The Sheridan girls tallied 135 points to edge Fairfield Union, which had 126.5, for the team title, while New Lexington placed third with 72 in the Division II district meet at Pomeroy Meigs.

Claire Shriner claimed the 100 hurdles (15.72) and 300 hurdles (47.37); Adrienne Spicer won the 100 (12.79) and 200 (26.87); Spicer, Kira Howe, Ally Perkins and Julie Nichols captured the 4x100 (51.83); Shriner, Beckett Strong, Spicer and Nichols were first in the 4x200 (1:47.98); and Shriner, Strong, Katelyn Heath and Nichols won the 4x400 (4:10.54) to pace the Generals.

Heath also placed first in the long jump (16-7 3/4) and third in the 400 (1:00.73); Strong took second in the 300H (49.27); Rilea Waite came in third in the shot (34-8 3/4); Nichols was fourth in the long jump (15-2); and the 4x800 of Faith and Nora Covey, Olivia Shonk and Grace Householder was fourth (10:30) to also advance.

Sydney Hambel won the 3,200 (12:08) and came in third in the 1,600 (5:40) to lead the Panthers. Isabella Starlin came in second in the 100 (13.33), McKenna Pingle took second in the 400 (1:00.24) and fourth in the 200 (27.65), Nora Duperow, Jocelynn Bowen, Bianca Friesner and Starlin placed second in the 4x100 (52.06), and Hambel, Emma Abrams, Grace Baker and Pingle were third in the 4x800 (10:27).

The New Lex boys were 12th (19), as Carson Kellogg, Hunter Renick, Chase Dumolt and Mason Klingler were fourth in the 4x200 (1:36.69) to qualify.

• Crooksville garnered several regional qualifiers from the Division III district held on Monday and Saturday at Nelsonville-York.

They will compete at Chillicothe Southeastern on Wednesday and Friday.

Grace Frame placed second in the shot put (37-2 1/2) and discus (114-0) to highlight the girls' effort.

Blaze Hunter moved on with a fourth-place finish in the 300 hurdles (45.65) and was part of three relays that advanced. He joined Nathan Ferguson, Gage Frash and Jacob Hammer to come in third in the 4x200 (1:37.56) and fourth in the 4x100 (46.84), while Hunter, Hammer and Frash ran with Alex Sandefur to take third in the 4x400 (3:45.98).

• Rosecrans and West Muskingum had individual qualifiers in the Division III district meet on Tuesday and Friday at St. Clairsville.

They will compete in the regional meet on Wednesday and Friday at Massillon Perry.

Rosecrans' Emily Backus placed third in the 100 (14.17) and fourth in the long jump (15-10 1/2) as the only qualifier for the Bishops, while West Muskingum's Carlee Hankinson tied for third in the high jump (4-8) to advance for the Tornadoes.
