NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- City Council Minority Leader Joseph Borelli introduced legislation on Thursday that would start a task force to examine the feasibility of separating Staten Island from New York City.

The Republican legislator failed to push through a similar bill in 2019 that died in committee.

Mayor Eric Adams would have the power to veto any bill that proposed Staten Island’s secession from the city, and he said he intends to keep Staten Island as a borough.

The state legislature would also need to weigh in on a move to secede, and passage of such a bill would require Gov. Kathy Hochul’s signature.

Staten Island is the city’s least populous borough with 475,000 residents, but as an independent city it would rank 41st in the nation — beating out cities like Miami, Minneapolis and New Orleans.
