We’ve got controversy heading into this year’s B1G Baseball Tournament.

Saturday afternoon, Purdue “secured” its spot in the field after its game against B1G champion Maryland was called off due to rain. At 9-12 in conference play, the Boilermakers could not be caught by Nebraska or Northwestern (both 9-14) because of the no-decision.

That, alone, wasn’t purely the reason behind some of the frustration in Lincoln and Evanston. Purdue’s first pitch against Maryland was scheduled initially for 1 p.m. ET. Rain didn’t hit the area until approximately 3:30 p.m. ET, per reports.

Maryland also had a travel curfew that put Saturday’s regular season finale in a time crunch.

Nebraska and Northwestern both had a chance to play their way into the final spot of the B1G Tournament on Saturday with a Purdue loss. The no decision guarantees the Boilers are in the field.

The Huskers are playing Michigan State and Northwestern is taking on Minnesota. The regular season ends on Saturday.

Maryland also “secured” an outright B1G regular season title with an 18-5 record in the league.

The B1G Baseball Tournament will get underway on May 25 from Charles Schwab Field in Omaha. Every game will air on Big Ten Network.
