Severe weather hits portions of Morgan County, power outages reported

Duke Energy Indiana power outages

According to a Duke Energy news release sent Sunday afternoon, about 14,000 customers remain without power throughout Indiana.

The hardest hit areas include Morgan, Bartholomew, Shelby, Monroe, Crawford, Brown and Decatur counties in southern Indiana.

"Power is expected to be restored to most customers by midnight, but in the hardest hit areas around Columbus, restoration may continue into Monday," the company said in the news release.

According to Duke, there were more than 57,000 customers in Indiana that lost power due to Saturday's storms.

Duke Energy Martinsville update

Around noon Sunday, Duke Energy is reporting around 300 customers are still without power in the Martinsville area. 

SCI REMC is reporting 31 outages in Morgan County.

9 a.m. Sunday update

Duke Energy continues to show more than 1,000 customers in Martinsville are without power. According to a note on its site, “(r)epairs in the hardest hit areas of will continue throughout the day. Additional damage assessment is underway this morning and estimated times for restoration will be made available later today.”

SCI REMC is reporting about 140 outages in Morgan County.

9:45 p.m. update

Duke Energy reports more than 1,000 customers in the Martinsville area are without power. Most of the customers are on the west side near the State Road 39 Bypass.

8:45 p.m. update

Light rain has started to fall in northern Morgan County.

7:30 p.m. update

SCI REMC is reporting about 330 of its customers in Morgan County are without power.

Duke Energy continues to report more than 3,000 customers without power in the Martinsville area.

6:30 p.m. update

Several thousand customers in the Martinsville are still without power. According to Duke Energy, its customers are expected to have electricity restored around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

SCI REMC is currently reporting about 500 of its customers in Morgan County are without power.

6 p.m. update

The severe thunderstorm watch for Morgan County and most of central Indiana has been allowed to expire.

There is currently no rain falling in Morgan County, however a line of storms is entering western Indiana, near Terre Haute, from Illinois.

Business closures

Several businesses around Martinsville have closed for the evening due to weather.

According to social media, Gather Around BBQ in downtown Martinsville has closed for the evening.

Brain Chillzz in Martinsville and Tomato Pie Pizza in Paragon have also closed due to power outages.

5 p.m. update

Light rain continues to fall in far eastern stretches of Morgan County.

SCI REMC is now reporting more than 1,300 customers are without power in Morgan County.

Duke Energy continues to report around 4,000 customers in Morgan County are without power.

4:30 p.m. update

Traffic signals throughout the city, including the downtown area, are not operational as of 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The State Road 39 Bypass is currently closed near Bender Lumber due to a downed powerline.

A line of severe weather has portions of Morgan County Saturday afternoon, which left several residents without power.

Earlier Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service out of Indianapolis issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of southern Indiana, including Morgan County, until 7 p.m. 

Shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday, South Central Indiana was reporting more than 1,200 customers in Morgan County were experiencing power outages.

SCI REMC and Duke Energy outages

Duke Energy, which provides power in the Martinsville area, reported about 4,000 outages Saturday afternoon.

AES Indiana, the electric provider for the Mooresville area, reported no outages around 4 p.m. Saturday.

Canceled events

Due to the inclement weather, several events Saturday night have been canceled.

The Spring Demolition Derby at the Morgan County Fairgrounds was cancelled.

Concerts for the Drink at the Creek Summer Concert Series at Cedar Creek Winery were also called off due to inclement weather.

Tree limbs down

There are several tree limbs down throughout the city of Martinsville. 

According to social media reports, several trees can be found hanging on power lines and in city streets.
