How Newcastle Can Earn £25 Million With Win On Final Matchday

No difference between 14th and 10th, you say? Please, think again!

No word has been used more when talking about Newcastle United over the past few months than money. The ownership takeover that has led to NUFC becoming the richest club in the world may receive another £25 million if Eddie Howe and the boys can defeat Burnley on Sunday.

With Sunday’s match against Burnley being the final matchday of the season, Newcastle has an opportunity to finish in 10th place if all goes their way. Currently, the club is sitting in 12th place, two points off of 10th place Brighton.

For NUFC fans, this is what Newcastle needs to earn 10th place:

  • Defeat Burnley
  • Brentford tie or lose to Leeds
  • Brighton lose to West Ham

If all of this is achieved, Newcastle will be given around £25 million if last year is any indication. As Chronicle Live points out, last season's 10th place team (Everton) earned £24.2 million, while Newcastle earned £19.8million for finishing in 12th place. As great as finishing in the top half would be for United, a loss could see them fall all the way to 14th place.

Technically Newcastle could jump all the way up to 9th, but they would need Leicester to somehow lose to Southampton by 20 goals. If that happens, James Ward-Prowse might actually deserve the player of the season nomination.

However, Newcastle’s opponent will be battling for much more money as Burnley attempt to avoid relegation. Burnley will be playing for everything as a win will keep them clear of relegation, but a loss or even a tie could see them back in the EFL Championship next season. With prize money on the line, Burnley needs to hope it isn’t the motivation United is looking for.
