NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Fans gathered in four Brooklyn subway stations to collect limited edition Biggie Smalls-themed MetroCards the MTA is distributing to commemorate the slain rapper’s 50th birthday.
The MTA teamed up with Rhino Entertainment, a record label that specializes in reissues, to print 50,000 of the cards, which feature a portrait of Christopher Wallace, better known as the Notorious B.I.G.
May 21 — Biggie’s birthday — was the first day they hit the streets. The cards are available on a first come, first serve basis.
The MTA is selling the specialty MetroCards at the Lafayette Avenue C station, Clinton-Washington Avenue C station, Clinton-Washington Avenue G station and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center station.
Biggie grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant and repped Brookln constantly in his music.
He was tragically shot to death on March 9, 1997 at the age of 24 — just weeks before the release of his second album, “Life After Death.”
Despite his short career, Biggie Smalls left an indelible imprint on hip-hop and contemporary music in general.
His songs can still be heard blasting from the open windows of Brooklyn motorists or from the speakers of fans resting on the stoops of Bed-Stuy brownstones.
