It was already feared, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Saturday that pitching prospect Luis Gil will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.
Gil, who pitched in a spot start for the Yanks last week, left his first start back in Triple-A earlier this week when he motioned to the dugout and pointed to his elbow right after throwing a pitch in the fifth inning. The 23-year-old will have a long road ahead of him after making Yankees history last year with three straight shutouts to begin his big league career, and finished the year with a 3.07 ERA over 29.1 innings.
Meanwhile, Chad Green was placed on the IL with an elbow strain, but Boone said the righty reliever is getting more opinions from doctors, and surgery is on the table for him as well.
“It looks like a significant injury,” Boone said.
Green left his outing on Thursday after throwing a pitch, similar to Gil.
