As a hybrid truck, the 2022 Ford Maverick can offer surprising efficiency. And that may have something to do with this vehicle’s successful sales. Now, the combined MPG of the Maverick hybrid is 37 mpg, but some drivers have been able to get much more out of Ford’s small truck. Recently, Jason Fenske of the YouTube channel Engineering Explained was able to do just that, by reporting an average of 50 mpg from the 2022 Ford Maverick.

Fenske has built up quite the following in the automotive world. In April of 2022, while driving a tester Maverick pickup truck, he was able to achieve 50 mpg. Compared to trucks of the past, that seems like a near-impossible number. Trucks are not traditionally known for their efficiency, but the 2022 Ford Maverick is shedding that stereotype through its hybrid powertrain.

While Fenske was able to see this level of fuel savings according to Ford Authority, not everyone has been so lucky. The 2022 Maverick hybrid has missed its EPA estimated mpg when tested by other publications. But even then, the mpg was still a fairly impressive feat.

Is the Ford Maverick good on gas?

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Ford Maverick is more comparable to a car than a pickup truck. And for that reason, it is considered good on gas. With the hybrid model, drivers can expect 42 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. This makes for a combined mpg of 37. Although if Fenske’s experience is any indication, some drivers could see better efficiency than that.

With the more powerful turbocharged engine, Maverick owners will not get the same level of efficiency. And that may be why the hybrid version has been such a hot commodity when it comes to Ford’s small truck.

The 2022 Maverick is an efficient pickup truck

When Fenske tested the efficiency of the Maverick, he did mention that the trip computer was not in-sync with the Google Maps data from his trip. Speeds during the trip included 60 to 70mph along with some idling, so it appears it happened under fairly normal conditions.

One wish that Fenske did have for the Maverick hybrid is that Ford would introduce an all-wheel drive version. Currently, the hybrid engine is only available with front-wheel drive, and that may be somewhat of a disappoinment to some. Ford does have the technology in place to add AWD through the Ford Escape.

Now, buying a Ford Maverick hybrid is not the easiest thing to do right now. Ford’s small truck has been immensely popular, and the brand was forced to put a pause on orders for 2022. It is still possible to find this compact pickup at a dealership, but until August of this year, you cannot place a new order.

For a small truck as practical as the 2022 Maverick, waiting for this vehicle is likely worth it. Especially when the efficiency is considered.
